Topham Park
Written by: Stephen Senkiw
A secluded pocket of homes tucked away in a lush location, a historic part of Toronto's past, and a short trip for city center commuters.
What's around here that makes Topham Park the perfect find:
Topham provides a friendly, child-safe community, with nearby transportation quickly connecting it to the rest of the city.
Though the area takes its name from the park in the middle of the neighbourhood, the whole area feels like a community playground. Several streets have open green spaces or wide boulevards in their centres, and it is here you will find dozens of children, often accompanied by parents, playing games and sporting activities.
Softball is distinctly popular here, with the Topham Park minor softball league, which began in 1973 and is a 100% volunteer organized...sponsored by many of the local businesses the league provides house-league softball for children between the ages of 5 - 18. The season generally runs from late April, thru until late June. There are also a Select Program for those that wish to play in tournaments throughout the summer months.
The neighbourhood was built in the 1940's to provide housing for Canadian war veterans and their families. Although there are some two-storey brick houses in the community, the most Topham Park homes are cozy, detached wood frame bungalows and one-and-a-half storey houses featuring cheery colourful siding and ornamented verandas.
With gingerbread accents and perennial gardens, many homes resemble quaint English cottages. There is an obvious pride of ownership that permeates through these charming details, and the care that homeowners take in maintaining their houses.
